A New Year, a New Wheel Color
Wheel color-coating has come a long way in the past several years. A decade ago, a vehicle on the road with colored wheels or brakes was a rare sight. Back then colored wheels were mainly reserved for fancy car shows or only for those who could afford to buy the extra details to make their expensive cars look over-the-top. With better developed technologies, increased affordability, more colors, color-combinations and paint matching, there are seemingly endless options available for automobile wheels today.
How can the color of wheels and brakes be changed? It is called color-coating because it is a coating and not “painted” on. The first steps in the process is to prepare the metal to be coated – this requires a removal of any prior coating or surface application to strip the wheel down to the organic metal. This is typically done via acid “bath”. The next step is often times a primer to be applied to the wheel so it will accept the color-coating. Then the color is applied with a spray gun designed specifically for metal coating. The gun-spray coating and the prepped wheel surface have opposite electrical charges which attract to each other making for a smooth and even application.
Next the wheel or brake is baked in a large oven at about 400F. The heat cures the paint coating hardening it. The result is a durable and solid color-coated wheel ready to be that unique accessory on an automobile. To view this process in action, check out a video created by Engineering Explained.
