Searching for Wheels on Amazon? What?
A recent search on Amazon for “wheels” reveals hubcaps and related stuff like wheel cleaner and locking wheel bolts, to name a few. It seems one can buy nearly everything under the sun on Amazon, so I was a bit surprised they don’t sell wheels. Then I thought about it more and I realized that they’d probably lose money on their 2-day Prime shipping benefit if they sold & shipped bulky, heavy wheels.
It makes sense that they don’t sell wheels, so from there, I narrowed my search down to just hubcaps. I wanted to know just who is buying wheels, well hubcaps, on Amazon. What did I discover? Toyota Corolla and Toyota Camry are four of the top six best-selling hubcaps on the list, the other two being universal hubcaps with no branding. Not surprising considering three out of every five cars on the road appear to be one or the other!
Clearly popular as a “wheel” search result on Amazon, hubcaps might seem like a quick and easy fix, but plastic can get damaged, cracked and worn more quickly than metal wheels. It is a fact that plastic just doesn’t hold up to the elements or road-hazards as well as metal (aluminum, steel, chrome, alloy, etc).
Considering how well cars are made these days, especially the workhorses like Camrys and Corollas, it makes sense to invest in a good set of wheels that will withstand a couple decades of use. And by wheels, I don’t mean hubcaps!
