The (Wheel) Bends
Alloy wheels are frequently referred to as "aluminum" wheels but they are actually composed of an alloy of aluminum and nickel. The amounts of each element have a great affect on the properties of the alloy. Less nickel produces a lighter, more “soft” and bendable wheel. More nickel produces a heavier wheel that is harder to bend yet more brittle by comparison.
Obstacles, curbs, potholes, displaced manhole covers, and other random objects in the road are just a few of the ways your wheels can incur a bend. Often times damage occurs on the inside or back of the wheel, making it difficult to see the damage when the wheel is on the car. When your car begins to vibrate or your tire starts to lose air will be the first signal that something is wrong.
Wheel Bends Undone
There are several effective processes for straightening alloy wheels, including cold roller technology and hydraulic assistance technology. Believe it or not, some auto shops still use the hammer method. Never allow anyone to hammer out your aluminum wheels, as the outcome will likely be a cracked or destroyed wheel. Even if the wheel stays intact, the alloy will be severely damaged.
Beware of certain gadgets available on the market that claim to help straighten wheels. Usually, these involve two crescent-shaped metal blocks with a hydraulic ram between them. Supposedly, one places the crescent blocks inside the curve of the wheel and uses a foot pump to spread the blocks until the bend is removed. It seems like an easy way to destroy a wheel or cause increased damage.
